wineCellar sync fails constantly, Posted Fri Jun 25, 2010 8:03 pm
I have both the iPad version and the Windows version of wineCellar and most of the time I cannot sync. I use my iPad to remotely add my wines then try to sync them to add photos from my PC.

Problem is I rarely can sync. I keep getting the following error message:

"SERVICE LOCKED - The service is locked by another user. Try again later."

What other user? I am the only one on. Please provide some insight here.

Thanks

I now get FAILED CONNECTION: Error Response Code: 404. No idea, now cannot even sync at all. This is from my iPad. PC says service locked and no I am not trying to run them at the same time.

We have received 3 such similar reports today. Something with the Cloud has broken with regards to desktop syncing after data has been pushed up by an iPhone/iPad.

We are currently investigating and apologize for the inconvenience.

I cannot get a handle on where the issue is coming from. I can partially sync from my iPad then I see the few wines that were added via the Cloud. I add a few pics to those newly added from the iPad via my PC then cannot update the Cloud. My iPad has all of the photos for the wine labels on it. I am only trying to enter data via the iPad, then update photos via my PC. As per your email, it appears something in the Cloud is not working thereby not allowing me to update via the iPad. Anything done via PC is not a problem.

Thanks

Did this get resolved because I have precisely the same problem?

The problem stems from failures to send certain photos up into the cloud. The cloud software cannot figure out what type of photo it has received (jpeg, png, or gif) and drops the photo. Unfortunately, the cloud still records that it received a photo. Then, when the iPad tries to sync to get that entry, it fails when it requests a photo which is not there.

To get the iPad syncing again, I will need to look at your account and determine which entry is missing a photo but claims there should be one. I will update it to know it does not have that photo. That will stop syncing from failing.

As to the original issue of why the cloud is not identifying the photo type, that I am still looking at. I need to get from someone a copy of a photo file which fails this way so I can figure out what is unusual about it.

In the meantime, I will correct the cloud algorithm so it does not get into this state of believing it has a photo file which is missing.

I'll post back here when I have found the missing photo file and corrected that entry.

The cloud has been updated such that the inability to recognize a photo file does not break syncing. However, this does not fix any entries which were broken by the previous behaviour.

Please let us know if you are unable to sync, especially if you get a "404" error. We can then track down what photo files are missing and fix the corresponding entries.

Some more technical background: It seems that the cloud was identifying the type of photos files from the IPTC meta data in the photo file. If the file does not have this meta data embedded in it, that would trigger this problem. I suspect that some photo editing software may strip out the IPTC meta data.
